UOPD SAFETY/SECURITY ADVISORY 2015-11-06

The University of Oregon Police Department was notified of two recent incidents of concern on UO property.

On the evening of November 5, UOPD received information that on November 4 some time between 9:00-10:30 p.m., a woman in the library at the Knight Law Center at 15th Avenue and Agate Street observed an unknown man touching himself inappropriately. She described the man as white, in his late 20s, with scraggly facial hair, wearing sweat pants.

Also on the evening of November 5, UOPD received a report that a male student encountered an unknown man in the parking lot at Autzen Stadium just before 7:00 p.m. that night, and the student felt that the man might have intended to commit robbery. The man was described as white, in his 20s to early 30s, about 5-foot-10 of average build, wearing a black zip-up hooded sweatshirt possibly with an emblem on the chest, and blue or black pants. He had little facial hair and no glasses. He was reported to have asked the student what he possessed, with a challenging manner that made the student feel that the man intended to rob him. The student turned away and did not respond, and the man reportedly walked away to the north.

The incidents remain under investigation by the University of Oregon Police Department and anyone with information is asked to call UOPD at 541-346-2919. Updates regarding this incident when and if available will be posted on the UOPD website at police.uoregon.edu.

What is this notice? The University of Oregon Police Department issues Safety and Security Advisories to inform the campus community about incidents or trends in campus safety, along with prevention information. The advisories differ from the Timely Warning Notices which are issued when certain crimes are reported on or near campus property, and in compliance with federal law.

SAFETY TIPS FROM UOPD

No action or inaction by a crime survivor makes that person responsible for his or her victimization. Perpetrators are responsible for crimes and their effects. The following suggestions may help reduce the possibility of experiencing such a crime, or may improve opportunities to receive prompt assistance.

It is a crime to intentionally touch someone against his or her will, regardless of the situation.

Encourage friends to travel in pairs or with trusted companions, especially at night or in remote areas. Be aware of surroundings, and attempt to keep a safe distance from strangers. Whenever possible, keep valuables secured and out of sight.

If someone attempts to grab you, yell “NO” loudly, do whatever is necessary to get the person to let go, and flee to a safe place like a populated location, and call police. When safe, try to remember as much as possible about the person’s appearance and behavior.

Use UO Safe Ride (541-346-RIDE ext. 2), call a taxicab, or contact UOPD for an on-campus escort (541-346-2919).

If you feel you or others are in danger, call 9-1-1.

To report suspicious, illegal or unusual activity on campus, call UOPD at 541-346-2919. For emergencies or if you see a crime being committed, call 9-1-1. Please report concerns or crimes right away.
