Campus power outage July 13, 2:20 p.m.

A power outage has been reported on the University of Oregon campus, affecting the following buildings (list updated 5:50 p.m.): Allen, Chapman, Chiles, Computing Center, Deady, Fenton, Friendly, Gerlinger Annex, Gilbert, Hendricks, Johnson, Collier House, Knight Library, Lawrence West, Lillis, Museum of Art, Music, Peterson, Susan Campbell, Villard.

Update 2:48 p.m.: Knight Library has been evacuated after a general fire alarm was triggered by a burst steam pipe in a lower level mechanical room. Eugene/Springfield Fire Department, UO Campus Operations, and UO Safety and Risk Services responded, and steam to the location was shut off.

Update 4:15 p.m.: Knight Library will remain closed for the night.

Update 4:23 p.m.: Recent UOAlert! message issued with a four-hour estimate for power restoration; crews continue testing and more information will be provided when available.

Update 5:30 p.m.: Electricians continue to investigate the original power outage and are attempting repair. Cause and time of repair are unknown, and could exceed the previous four-hour estimate issued at 4:23 p.m. The testing process must be done very gradually and carefully to minimize the risk to workers and buildings and equipment. When the trouble issue is identified and repaired, power will need to be brought back gradually to groups of buildings to also minimize potential damage or fuse failures.

Update 5:36 p.m.: The Student Recreation Center will close the pool an hour earlier than normal, at 6:00 p.m.

Update 5:50 p.m.: Allen Hall was added to the list of buildings without power; it lost power at the same time as the others at 2:20 p.m., but had not been included in the initial internal report.

Update: 9:00 p.m.: Electrical crews have identified the problem as a faulty cable in an underground electrical vault, and have re-routed power through a sound feeder line. Power is gradually being restored to all the affected buildings, and classes and offices will be fully functional Thursday morning. Knight Library will re-open Thursday morning at its regular time.

Any UO departments that experience computer network problems Thursday morning should call 541-346-NETS for help.

The burst steam pipe below Knight Library was found to not be related to the power outage.
