What is this notice? Campus Crime Alerts are released by the University of Oregon Police Department when certain crimes are reported on or near campus property, and in compliance with federal law. These timely warnings provide information about campus safety situations, and allow campus community members to take precautions for personal safety. This incident may have occurred outside the university’s Clery Act reportable area, but was a serious crime close to campus and is being shared with students and employees. All crimes should be reported as soon as possible to local law enforcement.

The University today was informed of a robbery that occurred near/at the southeast corner of Franklin Boulevard and Agate Street by the John E. Jaqua Center at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Friday, December 20. The suspects were described as three white adult males, 18 to 30 years of age, two suspects between 5’6” to 5’8” tall and one suspect about 6’1” to 6’2” tall, all wearing black sweatshirts, black pants, and black bandanas over their faces. The suspects were armed with knives and demanded that the victim hand over his valuables. The victim, who is not affiliated with UO, then ran from the area after turning over items.

Separately, building occupants in the Science Complex and Knight Campus reported to UO police several instances of vandalism as well as a burglary and theft in Klamath Hall, Onyx Bridge and the Knight Campus. It is estimated that this occurred between Saturday, December 21 and Sunday, December 22. Suspect information is not available at this time. Electronic access to the Science Complex has been placed on holiday schedule, which means exterior doors are secured and locked. Building occupants can access buildings using their prox cards, or can call UOPD (541-346-2919) to request access. UO police will be reviewing if additional security measures are warranted.

The University of Oregon police are actively investigating all incidents, and have searched the relevant areas. Anyone with information about these or similar incidents should call UOPD at 541-346-2919. SAFETY TIPS FROM UOPD

 

The following suggestions may help reduce the possibility of experiencing such a crime, or may improve opportunities to receive prompt assistance.

 

• Communities are safest when members look out for each other: report any suspicious activity or unauthorized strangers immediately.
• Bystanders should try to be aware of their surroundings, and if there are signs of a person in distress, bystanders should make themselves known and offer assistance if it is safe to do so, and/or seek immediate help from police or security personnel.  
• In secured buildings (including laboratory and research spaces and residence halls), do not let in strangers, do not allow strangers to enter behind you as a courtesy, do not prop open doors, and do not lend out keys. Only open the front door of a secured building or residence to someone you know and trust.
• Immediately report any malfunctioning doors or windows in UO buildings to CPFM Work Control (541-346-2319 – workcontrolcenter@uoregon.edu), and insist the problem be corrected as soon as possible. 
• Students residing in near-campus neighborhoods who are leaving the area for winter or spring break are encouraged to register their residences with the Vacation Watch program. During the break, UOPD will check registered vacant residences as often as possible.
• Assaults by strangers are far less common than assaults by people known to survivors. Self-defense classes can prepare people to deter or escape an assault, and have benefits for improved awareness and confidence. Credit courses are available from the Physical Education department and from UOPD.
• During the academic terms, students out at night or off campus are encouraged to use safe ride options available during the academic term such as UO Safe Ride (541-346-RIDE ext. 2), Designated Driver Shuttle (541-346-RIDE ext. 1), or the UO Campus Shuttle (map.uoregon.edu/campus-shuttle); call a taxicab or ride-hailing service; or contact UOPD for an on-campus escort (541-346-2919).  
• Report criminal activity (such as a break-in or intruder, robbery, or assault) immediately to 9-1-1, or for non-emergency situations on campus, to UOPD at 541-346-2919.

• Survivors have a right to report crimes to police and have crimes investigated and/or prosecuted to the fullest extent possible.
