Portland Campus Crime Alert 05-02-2023

What is this notice? Campus Crime Alerts are released by the University of Oregon Police Department when certain crimes are reported on or near campus property, and in compliance with federal law. These timely warnings provide information about campus safety situations, and allow campus community members to take precautions for personal safety. This incident may have occurred outside the university’s Clery Act reportable area, but was a serious crime close to campus and is being shared with students and employees. All crimes should be reported as soon as possible to local law enforcement.

 

The UO Portland security team has reported a burglary to the Portland Police Bureau. Between 11:47 p.m., Friday, April 28 and 12:42 a.m., Saturday, April 29 a person entered the Portland White Stag Burnside Building by breaking a 2nd level window and entering room 260.

The individual was carrying six or seven laptops when they left the building via the 2nd level emergency exit at 12:42 a.m.

The suspect is described as a white/light-skinned male, 20 to 25 years old, 5’8” to 5’ 9”, wearing a black hat with orange lettering and orange bill, black hoodie, black pants and black boots.

UOPD encourages students and employees to immediately report any crimes or suspicious activity on or near campus to ensure a prompt investigation.

SAFETY TIPS FROM UOPD

No action or inaction by a crime survivor makes that person responsible for his or her victimization. Perpetrators are responsible for crimes and their effects. The following suggestions may help reduce the possibility of experiencing such a crime or may improve opportunities to receive prompt assistance.

  • UO Portland security guards can walk students, faculty, and staff to their vehicles in the parking lot, and to nearby transit options (train and bus stops). Security can be reached at 503-412-3696 or at the front reception desks at the White Stag or Naito buildings.
  • Students can use the Lyft Ride Smart program for up to $8 off per ride Contact Carrie Toth (ctoth@uoregon.edu) if you need a sign-up link.
  • Communities are safest when members look out for each other: report any suspicious activity or unauthorized strangers immediately.
  • Bystanders should try to be aware of their surroundings, and if there are signs of a person in distress, bystanders should make themselves known and offer assistance if it is safe to do so, and/or seek immediate help from police or security personnel.
  • Report criminal activity (such as a break-in or intruder, robbery, or assault) immediately to 9-1-1, or for non-emergency situations on campus, to UOPD Portland at 503-412-3696.
  • When entering the White Stag and Naito buildings, do not allow strangers to enter behind you as a courtesy. Do not prop open doors, and do not lend out keys.
