Winter Weather Update

12/6/2013 5:35am
The University of Oregon is open and operating on regular schedule. Please use caution on campus and beware of walkways that may be slick. When traveling to campus today, please be aware of falling branches and downed trees and proceed with caution.
It is understood that some individuals may not be able to travel to campus during inclement weather. Members of the campus community are expected to use their best judgment in assessing the risk of coming to campus and returning home, based on individual circumstances. Those who believe that the road conditions from home are dangerous are encouraged to stay there to prevent injury. Be alert to changing conditions and check routes before venturing out. Conditions can change quickly and can vary considerably throughout the area, given its geography.

Below are some useful resources to help you stay up to date on winter weather information.

Fire out at Hamilton complex 5/14/13 11:40am

The University of Oregon Police Department reported at 11:27 a.m. Tuesday that a fire had been put out at the Hamilton complex.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal will investigate.

Earlier in the day, University of Oregon Emergency Management and Continuity received notification that Dunn Hall (Hamilton) had been evacuated as well as the kitchen in that complex. The report was of a fire in a garbage can in the basement.
Fire trucks responded.

“A small fire started in the basement of Dunn hall and the residence hall was evacuated,” university spokesperson Phil Weiler said. “The fire is out and Eugene fire is now venting smoke out fo the building so that people can return to their rooms.”

Located on the eastern edge of campus across from Bean, Hamilton is a complex of 10 smaller halls housing nearly 800 students.

Planned Power Outages

When

Tuesday, Aug. 28, Wednesday, Aug. 29, and Thursday, Aug. 30, from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m

Campus will experience intermittent outages, lasting from several seconds to several minutes. Standby power will also experience intermittent outages.  The frequency and duration of theses power interruptions will be taken into consideration when developing the testing sequence, to aid UPS systems in recovery.

Why

The purpose is to connect the new co-generation system to the utility grid, and verify proper operation and coordination of all equipment.

To ensure all systems perform as anticipated, it is imperative to test every aspect of the system as equipment is installed and software programs are updated prior to being placed into normal operation.  It is also a condition of the local utility and Bonneville Power Administration to fully test and confirm system safety operations and metering.

Impact Summary

The planned campus wide electrical shutdown will affect all campus facilities, except those few that receive their power directly from EWEB (see list below).

Please turn off all electronic equipment, including computers and printers prior to the shutdown each night.

Anticipated Impacts:

  • Egress lighting will experience intermittent outages but will restore.
  • Elevators will be out of operation beginning at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, returning to service between 7:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. each day. Buildings with multiple elevators will have only one elevator in service until the testing is completed Friday morning. A map showing elevator locations is forthcoming. Signage will be posted on elevators, with directions to the operable elevator in multiple elevator buildings.
  • Fire System : Fire systems will remain active and monitored.
  • HVAC (heating, ventilation and cooling) will be monitored.
  • Telephones that have data capabilities will be affected by the power interruptions. These phones should be working once testing is completed unless there is an issue with the Network or Ethernet switch in your building. These switches will be monitored by Network Services.

Message from the Provost

3/21/12, 10:40 AM

Hello,

As you know, we have delayed the University’s opening today and have had to reschedule some final exams because of the inclement weather. Examinations scheduled at 10:15 am on March 21 have been delayed until 1:00 pm on the same day. There are 58 students with tests scheduled at both 10:15 and 1:00. I would ask that you work with those students to accommodate their conflicting tests. I would also ask that you work to accommodate the needs of those students who may be unable to safely travel to campus today. Please see the University homepage for other weather-related information.

Thanks to everyone for your efforts to accommodate students’ needs in these special circumstances.

Be safe,

Lorraine
