PeaceHealth administration has placed the PeaceHealth North building in lockdown, after a man made a general threat about the University District hospital. Police are seeking the man, who is not known to have weapons but is known for past agitated behavior at the hospital. Police did not advise the lockdown, hospital administration elected to do so as a precautionary measure.

UOPD has placed a community service officer at PeaceHealth North to look after UO employees at the location; employees at PeaceHealth North may exit and re-enter the building with proper identification. As always, police encourage employees to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious activity.

We are experiencing phone system issues with UO Police Dispatch (541-346-2919) and some Campus Planning and Facilities Management buildings.  Please call 911 for emergencies until we restore phone system.

In collaboration with regional environmental experts (Lane Regional Air Protection Agency) and the Pac-12 Conference, the University of Oregon has been constantly evaluating the potential for any air quality issues that may arise during our game Saturday against Southern Utah. Fan and student-athlete safety is our paramount concern, and while all data at this point indicates no health risks or dangers posed by air quality, we will continue to collectively evaluate smoke conditions and would enact any contingencies as circumstances dictate.

With respect to the expected warm temperatures, our event operations team (UOPD, EPD, the Eugene-Springfield Fire Department, the American Red Cross, and CMS) has a plan in place regarding Saturday relative to the expected high temperatures. Per the normal policy at Autzen Stadium, fans are permitted to bring sealed, plastic bottles of water in the stadium, and we will have hydration stations available for fans to refill their plastic water bottles.

Also, additional water misters are being placed on the concourses and along the North rim of the stadium, and there will be an increased number of EMT medical personnel in attendance. Two recovery tents will be in place on the South side of the stadium with coolers of ice towels for any fans requiring assistance.

As public health officials have said, fans should remain hydrated and monitor the weather situation in order to make informed decisions regarding game attendance based on their individual health profiles. According to airnow.gov, sensitive groups in this situation can include people with lung disease, older adults and children are at a greater risk from exposure to ozone, whereas persons with heart and lung disease, older adults and children are at greater risk from the presence of particles in the air.

Smoke from regional forest fires have pushed air quality in the Eugene-Springfield area into the “very unhealthy” zone on Aug. 28.

The local Air Quality Index (AQI) has climbed to 223 as of 12:30 p.m.

Many University of Oregon buildings can filter out a portion of the particulates in the air, so remaining indoors is best when possible. Outside doors and windows should stay closed in buildings served by central HVAC systems.

An AQI between 200-300 is considered “very unhealthy.” Eugene is typically around 30-50 and considered “healthy.” Most people may start to notice symptoms including burning eyes, scratchy throat, and other mild respiratory effects. More sensitive populations may experience more serious symptoms such as coughing or difficulty breathing.

Recent weather reports suggest smoke may begin to clear out after Tuesday. Please refer to the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency (LRAPA) for additional information and a current indication of the AQI.

Emergency response personnel responded to Heustis Hall this evening for a reported chemical spill. The initial investigation has indicated that the chemical involve does not pose a serious threat; the reported substance is a mild irritant. Two individuals in the impacted lab were transported for precautionary medical evaluation.  An All Clear message will be sent once the building is reopened.

December 15, 2016 – 8:00pm

The University of Oregon Eugene campus remains closed, Friday, December 16th. All events are canceled.

The one exception to the closure is for law school exams. A separate message has been sent directly to law students regarding the final exam schedule.

While crews are diligently working to address issues, significant icing remains in the trees which makes for dangerous conditions on campus and throughout the Eugene-Springfield area.

Personnel responsible for responding to inclement weather and related cleanup under the university’s closure policy (https://policies.uoregon.edu/vol-4-finance-administration-infrastructure/ch-7-real-property-facilities-planning/facilities-and) are expected to report to work tomorrow, provided they can do so safely. Employees in this category should contact their supervisor if they have concerns about safety related to traveling to campus.

If you are required to be on campus, please use extreme caution when outdoors as there are several downed trees and power lines in the greater campus community. Avoid walking under or near trees or downed power lines. As ice begins to melt, there is increased risk from ice and branches falling out of the trees.
